Korle-Bu
BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Nurses and Midwives play important roles in the health care delivery system in Ghana, therefore Quality training is a pre-requisite for the performance of these roles.
The Nursing Training College, Korle-Bu was established in 1945 as the premier institution in Ghana for Nursing education. It was the first State Registered Nursing Institution in the then Gold Coast. This institution was the first of its kind in the whole of West Africa and was established with the aim of producing high calibre quality nurses to replace the foreign ones who were managing the newly established hospitals. With a foundation class of six students, the college has matured into one of the largest Registered General Nursing Training Colleges in the country since 1999.
The Midwifery training school was established as a result of the high infant mortality rate, which at the time was 290 per 1000 live births. The government therefore decided to open maternity hospitals and training schools for the midwives in the districts of James Town and Christiansburg in the year 1927.
Two African midwives trained in England were employed to work at these midwifery homes.
The first batch took their final examination in 1930. All the midwives who qualified from 1930 to 1932 were issued with their certificates in 1932 when the first Midwives Ordinance was passed and the Central Midwives Board was constituted. Training continued until the entry requirement for training was persons with the State Registered Nurse Certificate (SRN) or the Qualified Registered Nurse Certificate (QRN).
The period for training was 1 year and 1 ½ years respectively, but the training period for the QRN was phased out in 1979. The training of persons with the State Registered Nurse Certificate (Post SRN Midwifery) continued until the Registered midwifery started in 2003 for applicants with SSCE. The period of training is 3 years (6 Semesters). In January 2008, the two institutions, that is the Nurses Training College and Midwifery Training School, Korle-Bu which was operating separately, merged under one Principal as the administrative head. This was in line with a Ministry of health Policy.
The school can be located in Korle-Bu in the Accra Metropolitan area. It is a residential school, located just a few minutes’ walk from the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital down the Alexandra Street. Set in the quiet surroundings, the college is an ideal place for academic work and attracts a high calibre of applicants for training. The environment provides a unique opportunity for students of the college to interact with their counterparts from other health training institutions that are located on the same compound and area. They also have the advantage of sharing experiences and exchanging ideas with students from other nursing and midwifery training colleges who come for clinical practice experience.
“Everyday at the Premier College (NMTC Korle Bu) is like a blessing with the active students and talented staff members around.
